Manchester United vs Leicester City: Match Report [All Goals Video Highlights]

Manchester United began the 2018-19 Premier League season with a 2-1 victory over Leicester City at the Old Trafford on Friday night.

Coming into the game on the back of a poor pre-season and a frustrating transfer window, it took the Red Devils just three minutes to get going. The Foxes’ right-back handled a loose ball inside the box, and Paul Pogba, handed a surprise start and the captain’s armband for the game, made no mistake from the penalty spot.

United struggled to drive home the early advantage however, as the visitors grew into a threat. However, with less than ten minutes left to play, Luke Shaw scored his first ever goal for United to make it 2-0 and secure the points.

There was some late drama with substitute striker Jamie Vardy pulling one back for Leicester in the stoppage time, but Jose Mourinho’s men managed to hold on to their lead and begin the new campaign with three points.

Here’s how the Red Devils’ players fared on the opening night of the new season;

Made a sensational stop to deny James Maddison in the first period and pulled off another impressive stop to keep Demarai Gray out. Will be disappointed with the manner in which United conceded the goal.

The wantaway Italian defender was United’s biggest weak link at the back on Friday and was given a lot of trouble by the dangerous Gray. Mourinho will be hoping for Antonio Valencia to return at the earliest.

Solid start to the campaign for the Ivorian. Won almost everything in air, played with his typical gusto and aggression. Possibly could have done a little more to deal with the goal.

Had a slow start to the game, but grew with time. Came out on top in a physical battle against Kelechi Iheanacho in the first period, which was a major highlight. Will be hoping to build on that display.

A refreshing performance from the Englishman. Mostly reliable at the back, apart from one instance when he almost gifted Leicester a goal by holding on to the ball too long. Got forward well and showed great determination to score the second goal.

A solid enough debut for the Brazilian. Showed plenty of fight and aggression, looked to impact the game on both sides of the pitch. Was a bit careless with the ball at times though.

Starting his first Premier League game over four years after his debut, the youngster continued his pre-season form against the Foxes. Calm and calculative in possession, was a bit rash at times, but another encouraging display in the holding role.

Not the best game for the Spaniard, but he looked to create chances each time he was on the ball. Missed a great chance to score. Got the assist for Shaw’s goal.

A quiet game for United’s new No.10. Showed good energy at the top, but couldn’t hold up the ball well enough and strayed offside on a number of occasions. Contributed defensively.

Won the penalty early on, but failed to stamp his authority on the game. Did create a few chances towards the end of the game, but wasn’t clinical enough on the night.
