CHELSEA being sold by Roman Abramovich is inevitable, football club ownership expert James Montague has claimed.

The Russian has been central to the London side’s success since he acquired the club in 2003.

In that time, the Blues have won five Premier League titles, five FA Cups and one Champions League.

The 51-year-old rose to prominence in the oil and gas industry after the Cold War, becoming closer to Boris Berezovsky, an associate of former President Boris Yeltsin.

Abramovich was one of the first to recommend Vladimir Putin as his successor and remains a close advisor to this day.

Putin came under intense media scrutiny when former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned in Salisbury this year.

And James believes the Chelsea owner’s proximity to the Russian President could have a permanent impact on the club.

Speaking exclusively to StarSport, James said: “If something was offered to buy and he decided to sell, it could be done very quickly.

“I don’t think the issue is if he sells the club, it’s when he sells the club.

“There’s no doubt that Chelsea fans love him and he’s invested a lot of money.

“He’s always been a controversial figure because of his close connections to Putin and how he made his money, especially the fact he’s part of this super-elite clan of oligarchs in Russia.

“That tells you how plugged in this guy is – he can’t even come into the country anymore!”

And the odds are against Abramovich being connected to club – and could even have sold before the end of the season.

Betfair are offering 1/3 for the Russian to still be the owner by May 2019 and 9/4 for the club to be sold in that time.

James Montague was speaking to StarSport to promote his new book, ‘The Billionaires’ Club: The unstoppable rise of football’s super rich owners’.
