Sky Sports confirm Arsenal move for Borussia Monchengladbach Star Player – Mustafi possible replacement?

Arsenal and Tottenham are monitoring Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back Matthias Ginter, according to Sky Sports. The 25-year-old has been tracked by Arsenal’s rivals, Tottenham since before he left Borussia Dortmund in 2017, and they are said to be scouting for new centre-backs now ahead of the summer, with a lot of uncertainties surrounding the future of Toby Alderweireld.

The Gunners have been terrible defensively this term and have shipped 36 goals already this season, which makes them the worst defence in the top six in the Premier league.

They have struggled with injuries in the defence as well as loss of form from the likes of Shkodran Mustafi and Stephan Lichtsteiner.

Sokratis who was signed in the summer has shown promise alongside Laurent Koscielny who recently returned from a six-month injury spell, but at 33, Koscielny is no longer the defender he used to be.

Rob Holding started the season brightly and looked set to replace aging Koscielny after cementing his place in the starting lineup but ended his season prematurely after sustaining a long-term injury to his knee.

The likes of Nacho Monreal, Granit Xhaka and Stephan Lichtsteiner have had to fill in at centre-back this season, a situation the Gunners would like to avoid next season, and they now believe Matthias Ginter could be an option to improve the defence.

Tottenham have extended Alderweireld’s contract by an extra 12 months, but he has a 25 million release clause on his deal which could easily be triggered by the numerous clubs interested in him this summer.
